Undergraduate Research Assistantship (URA) Scholar Award

Alaska INBRE’s URA Scholar Award supports undergraduate students from the University of Alaska in pursuing One Health research. Applications are accepted for research projects conducted during the summer, fall and/or spring.

Purpose and Goals

The URA Scholar program provides funding for undergraduate or dual-enrolled high school students engaged in research at any of Alaska INBRE’s partner institutions (UAA, UAF, UAS, ANTHC or SCF) . Students work with a faculty preceptor (mentor) to design and conduct a research project aligned with the goals of the Alaska INBRE program. Scholars gain valuable experience in research techniques, data collection, analysis, and communication.

Students receive an hourly wage starting at $17.50 (or $18.00 with prior lab experience), and their preceptor is awarded up to $2,000 in research supply funding in the summer or $500 per semester during the academic year. Students may also apply for a housing or food subsidy of up to $3,000 if conducting research outside of their home community during the summer.

Eligibility

Applicants must be enrolled at a UA campus during the funding period and in good academic standing (minimum 2.5 GPA). A faculty preceptor must be identified in advance, and the student and preceptor must collaborate to complete the application.

Application Requirements

Applications include:

  • A description of the project
  • A statement of research interests and career goals
  • Unofficial transcripts
  • A faculty support letter and preceptor checklist
  • If applying for a food and housing subsidy, a description and cost estimate of needs

Students must submit their documents via the online form. Faculty preceptors should email their documents separately to ua-akinbre@alaska.edu.

Review Process and Award Conditions

Applications will be reviewed by an INBRE committee based on academic merit, research relevance, mentor support, and quality of application materials. Final award decisions are made by the Administrative Core Leadership.
