The Alaska IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) is supported by a grant from the
National Institutes of Health. The primary objective of the Alaska INBRE First Research Experience (FiRE) is
to support undergraduate students engaged in One Health science research with mentorship from researchers across the AK INBRE network.

The First Research Experience (FiRE) is a 10-week summer research program that introduces undergraduate and dual-enrolled students to scientific research. FiRE begins with a 3-day virtual bootcamp before beginning research at one of the three UA campuses: University of Alaska Anchorage, University of Alaska Fairbanks or University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau.

Students will identify broad areas of interest and then be matched with an appropriate research preceptor
(mentor). Throughout the research experience, students will meet weekly for a virtual career development
workshop. Students will receive an hourly wage and supply budget, and may apply for additional funding for room, board and travel.
