Research Project (RP) Funding Opportunity
The Research Project opportunity is currently closed.
The Research Project (RP) opportunity is designed to support early-stage and established investigators at Alaska INBRE network partner institutions to lead biomedical and health-related research projects. This competitive funding opportunity enables investigators to strengthen their research programs, train undergraduate students, and advance toward securing independent external funding. The opportunity is open annually, in October.

Purpose and Scope
RP awards aim to expand biomedical research capacity across Alaska’s INBRE network by funding high-quality, innovative research projects. Investigators from partner institutions may apply for one- or two-year awards of up to $100,000 per year. Projects must include a mentoring plan developed with their Scientific Advisor and offer undergraduate research opportunities.
Applications should propose compelling basic, translational, clinical, behavioral, or community-engaged research relevant to the One Health framework. Collaborative and interdisciplinary proposals are encouraged, especially those that leverage INBRE core resources such as the Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) Core, Data Science Core, and Research Analytics Core.
Eligibility and Support
Applicants must be full-time faculty or investigators at one of Alaska’s six INBRE partner institutions. Early-stage investigators are especially encouraged to apply. Each project must have a qualified research mentor with NIH or equivalent federal funding experience. Applicants must demonstrate that they have at least six of 12 months’ effort dedicated to research. Effort dedicated to this project may be a fraction or all of the six months. Project leaders are expected to submit a detailed budget, including mentor costs and any planned conference travel if PPL wants to use the funding to support travel.
Projects are expected to include undergraduate student researchers. Proposals that include support for two or more undergraduate students may qualify for up to an additional $25,000 per year. RPs must demonstrate strong mentoring plans, articulate plans for publishing and submitting external grant proposals, and align with the overall goals of AK INBRE.
Application and Review Process
Letters of Intent (LOIs) are encouraged, and the investigator will receive feedback from the INBRE leadership team. Full proposals must be submitted through the NIH ASSIST system and evaluated according to NIH review criteria. The External Advisory Committee will rank proposals, and final approval is made by NIH.
Competitive applications will:
- Include meaningful student training
- Demonstrate relevance to One Health
- Propose high-quality, feasible research
- Demonstrate high potential for generating publications and external grant proposal applications
Mentors and project leaders must complete required training, including NIH’s Mentoring Undergraduate Students course, and follow all award compliance and reporting requirements.
