Exceptional Support Requests

Alaska INBRE occasionally considers unique funding needs that fall outside of standard INBRE funding opportunities. These opportunities are offered on a limited and infrequent basis.

Purpose

The Exceptional Support mechanism is designed to help address one-time, unanticipated needs. This is not meant to supplement existing funding streams but to provide critical resources in support of Alaska INBRE’s mission. Typical requests include equipment, technical support, or other extraordinary needs that align with INBRE’s One Health theme.

Eligibility

Applicants must be faculty or researchers affiliated with one of Alaska INBRE’s six partner institutions, (UAA, UAF, UAS, Ilisagvik College, ANTHC or SCF) . All applicants must have submitted required INBRE reporting for any previous funding. This mechanism cannot be used to appeal or reverse decisions from other INBRE award opportunities.

Allowable Costs

Award amounts vary and are determined in consultation with the INBRE Administrative Core. Funding may cover services, labor, or equipment. Honoraria and certain costs are prohibited under NIH guidelines. Applicants may inquire with the INBRE Fiscal Officer about allowable costs.

Application Process

All requests must be submitted via the online application form. Applications must include a description of the activity, budget details, and a statement explaining the relevance to One Health. Equipment requests must include a quote and department for inventory tracking.

Once received, requests are reviewed during the next monthly INBRE leadership meeting. Applicants will be notified if additional approvals are required.

Award Administration

If approved, funds are administered through the applicant’s home institution. Recipients must notify Alaska INBRE of any changes to the timeline or scope of the request. Equipment purchased with INBRE funds must be shared within the INBRE network as a resource.

Review Criteria

Preference is given to proposals that support INBRE’s research aims and have a high potential to build biomedical research capacity in Alaska.. Awards are made competitively and as funds allow.
