Support for Biomedical and Health Research through Data Science

The Alaska INBRE Data Science Awards (DSA) provide targeted support to expand data science services available to researchers across the INBRE network. These awards are designed to enhance capacity for biomedical and health research aligned with INBRE’s One Health theme by offering access to specialized analysis, external expertise, and training opportunities. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Types of Support Available

Flexible Options Based on Project Needs

Researchers may apply under one of three categories:

 

  1. Data Science Core Services: Support for data analysis conducted by Alaska INBRE Data Science Core staff, including work with researcher-generated or RAC-provided data.
  2. External Services: Funding for services not available within the INBRE network, such as biostatistical consulting.
  3. Training: Funding to attend short courses, workshops, or conferences that provide training in data science or relevant methods. This includes virtual options.

Applicants are encouraged to consult with the Data Science Core Director before applying.

Award Details

  • Maximum award: $5,000
  • Typical awards: Under $3,000
  • No salary or student wage coverage
  • Approximately 5–10 awards made annually

Awards are reviewed on a rolling basis, with notifications provided within four weeks of submission.

Who Can Apply

Eligible applicants include faculty and research professionals from any UA campus, Ilisagvik College, or researchers from ANTHC/SCF. Applicants from RAIN institutions may apply only for DSC staff-provided services (category 1). All applicants must be actively engaged in biomedical or health research.

Applications must be submitted through this online Google form and include:

 

  1. Project description and aims
  2. Type of support requested
  3. Timeline for activity and deliverables
  4. Alignment with INBRE goals
  5. Budget and justification

Reviewers will assess clarity, alignment with INBRE priorities, and potential for research advancement or training.
