INBRE IDeA States

The Institutional Development Award (IDeA) is a congressionally mandated program that builds research capacity in states that historically have had low levels of NIH funding.

It supports competitive basic, clinical, and translational research, faculty development, and infrastructure improvements.

The program aims to strengthen an institution’s ability to support biomedical research, enhance the competitiveness of investigators in securing research funding, and enable clinical and translational research that addresses the needs of medically underserved communities.

IDeA-eligible states include: Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, Wyoming, and Puerto Rico.

Strength in Collaboration

Together, the Western INBRE IDeA states form a powerful alliance for research innovation in the rural West. Through shared training, conferences, and cross-institutional mentorship, RAIN strengthens scientific capacity across the region and advances the goals of the NIH IDeA program.

Participating states:

Alaska INBRE

Host Institution: University of Alaska Fairbanks

Alaska INBRE focuses on the One Health theme, integrating human, animal, and environmental health. It supports student research, core facilities in data science and analytics, and community-based research efforts across six statewide partners, including Tribal Health Organizations.

Hawaii INBRE

Host Institution: University of Hawaii at Manoa
Hawaii INBRE supports biomedical research across the islands, emphasizing translational research and health disparities in Pacific Islander populations. Its infrastructure supports core labs, bioinformatics, and mentorship for emerging researchers statewide.

Idaho INBRE

Host Institution: University of Idaho
Idaho INBRE builds research and training capacity with a focus on molecular and biomedical sciences. The program emphasizes hands-on student research, faculty development, and partnerships between research-intensive universities and undergraduate institutions.

Montana INBRE

Host Institution: Montana State University
Montana INBRE addresses public health challenges in rural and tribal communities through research on infectious disease, environmental health, and health equity. The program prioritizes community engagement and supports research cores, pilot projects, and student training.

Nevada INBRE

Host Institution: University of Nevada, Reno
Nevada INBRE focuses on building a pipeline for biomedical careers and strengthening collaborations across its research and teaching institutions. It supports bioinformatics, proteomics, and mentoring programs for students and junior investigators.

New Mexico INBRE

Host Institution: New Mexico State University
New Mexico INBRE advances biomedical research through networked collaborations between academic institutions, Tribal colleges, and national laboratories. The program emphasizes cancer biology, health disparities, and research capacity building.

Wyoming INBRE

Host Institution: University of Wyoming
Wyoming INBRE supports biomedical research infrastructure across the state, with an emphasis on mentoring and training at primarily undergraduate institutions. Its programs promote career development and student engagement in rural settings.
